Cassie dreams about Jake telling her that it’s impossible to control black magic. In the dream, she gets really angry and chokes him. The morning after, Adam goes to see Cassie and she tells him that she has Francis Balcoin’s blood, evil’s blood, inside her veins. Adam promises her to keep it all secret, but he also tells her not to worry: it’s possible, he says, that Cassie takes after her mother.
Charles’ mother arrives at the Meades’ house and immediately gets told, by Diana, that his son has a relationship with Dawn. Grandma Kate pretends to be worried by the fact that Diana broke up with Adam, but she’s actually more worried about something else: she goes to see Principal Chamberlain to ask her what her plans are, and to make sure she doesn’t use Charles for her means just to leave him soon after.
At the abandoned house, Diana sees Adam researching black magic and she instantly understands that it’s about Cassie; when Cassie arrives and listens to Adam telling Diana everything she told him in confidence, she feels betrayed and gets so angry that her magic starts to choke Adam.
Kate’s presence in town makes Dawn nervous because she’s afraid that Kate may find out what she and her son are really planning, but, even if she tries her best to convice Charles to kill her, he disagrees because he doesn’t want to hurt his own mother but he promises Dawn that he’ll be keeping Kate at bay in his own way.
Cassie seeks for answers about her black magic and she wants to perform a spell to bring Jake back in town. Diana tries to take her mind off it and she invites Cassie to stay at her house for a few days, until Jane comes back from her trip to see a healer.
Faye would like to help Melissa overcome her depression for Nick’s death, and to do that she involves her friend in her plan to get back her individual powers: the two girls plan to do a spell stolen from Cassie’s Book Of Shadows, and they seek the help of a voodoo priest they found on the internet.
Dawn, bringing a bottle of wine, unexpetedly arrives at the Meades’ house for dinner, but Charles, fearing it might be poisoned, doesn’t let his mother drink the wine. Charles confronts Dawn in the kitchen, but she says she had no intention of killing Kate: she only wanted to keep an eye on her. Charles tells her again that he wants to do things his own way.
Melissa doesn’t believe that Lee, the internet voodoo priest, has real powers, but Faye lets him try the spell on her anyway.
Kate tells Cassie that she can see the black magic inside her, and she admits that she’s frightened by it. She tells Cassie there’s a spell she can perform that would draw the magic out of her so that it would never take over Cassie like it took over her father. Diana trusts her grandmother so she tells Cassie to trust her, too.
Leaving the house, Kate tells to her son that she’s going to meet with Nancy Collier, but Charles doesn’t believe his mother, and in fact she goes to the forest with Cassie and performs the spell: She calls on Mother Earth to free the girl from her darkness. As part of the spell, Kate breaks a branch of elder tree, the death tree, and Cassie collapses.
Diana finds mandrake root, that she knows was used by the Witch Hunters to try to kill the circle, inside Kate’s suitcase and, fearing for Cassie’s life, she calls Adam for help.
Faye doesn’t regain her powers after the spell, so she goes back to Lee’s house to confront him: he tells her that he can’t do magic, but he can sense that Faye is a witch and, he says, he knows a way to help her with her powers.
Charles finds out that his mother lied about meeting Nancy. Dawn would like to take charge and asks him to give her the crystal, but he has no intention of giving it to her.
Cassie wakes up inside a box: she needs to die, buried alive, so that the Earth can absorb her black magic. Kate ends the spell and runs away, but Cassie uses her magic to open the box just when Adam and Diana finally arrive.
Charles confronts his mother; she confesses she tried to kill Cassie because that was the only way to establish just how powerful the girl is. Charles disagrees with her methods and wants to talk to the Elders about what Kate did, but she stops him and tells him that she knows that he’s responsible for Henry’s death and Jane’s mental problems. Kate tells Charles not to succumb to temptations and to come out of the darkness soon if he doesn’t want to lose her, Diana and himself.
Cassie tells Diana that she felt the power grow inside her until it bursted out of her, and she says she’s scared because she liked the sensation. While Diana asks herself how powerful her friend really is, we see that Jack is back in town.....
