Marti is late. When she arrives at the class, Julian has just started to teach the three strikes law , the case he is dealing with. He says that no jury will ever take seriously a lawyer who is always late.
After that, the students who are interested in Julian's project are asked to sign a paper; when Marti is about to sign, Julian says she doesn't have to unless she is absolutely convinced. The girl eventually signs.
Later on Julian asks Marti questions in order to decide whether she is worthy of joining his project or not; although she tells everything she knows about the three strikes law, the teacher thinks she is not the right person because she is a cheerleader. Somehow she makes him change his mind.
The teacher wants her to study the Kobayashi vs Tennessee case and how it is related to the three strikes law.
When Dan and Lewis are arrested for taking part in a fight with the football team, Marti and Savannah ask Julian for help. He rushes to the police station to discuss the case with a policeman, promising that he will come back with TV cameramen if his clients are not released immediately the same way the football team have been.
Dan and Lewis are finally released. Marti thanks Julian, who says that he hopes she has learned something from the whole matter. Marti replies she has learned that policemen are liars. Everybody lies, teacher says, but she has to find the lie herself and turn it in her favour.
When Marti and Morgan realise that there is no Kobayashi vs Tennessee case related to the three strikes law and that it is nothing more than a reference from the Star Trek series, they decide to make their own one by turning the lie to their favour. Julian is really impressed and asks them to join his team.
