Yip Han Tang’s (Fay Ann Lee) parents immigrated to America from China. She lives now in Chinatown and hates her name, not knowing that Yip Han was the chinese Cinderella. Her mom (Elizabeth Sung) works as a seamstress in a sweatshop, and her father (Clem Cheung) works in a restaurant. Yip Han has only one friend, Janie (Margaret Cho), and they both love the movie Grease. Once she grows up, Yip Hane changes her name in Grace, in homage to Grace Kelly, and goes to work in the mergence and acquisition department of a great company. Now that she’s financially wealthy, Grace takes good care of her parents and dreams of being accepted in the high society. When she gets the invite for a party for the Opera season, Grace finally sees her dream come true. At the party she meets a few ladies that mistake her for someone else: Grace Tang, who has the same name but is the daughter of the owners of Shangai Tang. At the same party Grace gets also introduced to Andrew Barrington Jr. (Gale Harold). For that one night, and thinking she will never see the people she met at the party again, Grace chooses not to reveal her true identity. When Kay Douglas (Stephanie March), Andrew’s fiance who’s organizing a benefit, calls Grace and asks her to be a part of the committee, Grace decides to keep playing this game and doesn’t set things straight. A series of events, based on the mistaken identity, start from here. Grace and Andrew start to see one another and he, young lawyer who’s trying to get all the sweatshops closed, meets Grace’s family, even if she introduces them to him as a family she volunteers for.

Andrew realizes he’s in love with Grace and tells his mother (Christine Baranski) that he has no intention of marrying Kay anymore. His mother reminds him that he has responsibilities towards his family, and tells him to marry Kay; she also puts some doubts about Grace in Andrew’s mind. When Andrew goes to Grace’s to bring her pictures he shot of her, he finds there Ming (Ken Leung), Grace’s brother who Andrew thinks is the son of the family she volunteers for. Ming, who doesn’t know a thing about Grace’s mistaken identity, tells Andrew that Grace is his sister. Everything is now revealed and Andrew, extremely disappointed, leaves Grace in a very bad way.

Grace and Andrew will get reunited by their common interest in Kari Mills (Cindy Cheung): Grace should have worked on the acquisition of Kari’s company, and Andrew is trying to prosecute her because she blatantly uses sweatshops to sew her clothes. Before asking to get transferred to Hong Kong, Grace gives Andrew all the documents she has on Kari Mills and, using them, Andrew is finally able to expose Kari Mills, and his own father, Andrew Barrington Sr. (Roger Rees), Kari’s lawyer.

Andrew understands he still loves Grace and asks her to marry him and to take him with her to Hong Kong.
